How-to: Create an offline wallet or paper wallet and restore that wallet using Aeon-GUI application v0.12.6

First off, why would someone want to create a wallet file offline or print one off? People usually do this for one of 3 reasons:

1: They want to create a wallet file on a computer that will never access the internet and have a close to 0% chance of ever being compromised. This is referred to an offline wallet.
2: They want to create a wallet address quickly to send large amounts of coins to that they may hold for a long amount of time and forget about anything on a PC. Some people in the community call this Hodling. Some exchanges allow you to restore a paper wallet for simple offloading of coins stored by that address.
3: They do not own hardware that allows them to run a node or wallet software but still want to be able to obtain coins. Sometimes this is used by miners or people renting hash power that need an address to send coins to.

For any reason or use case, this is a simple way to get an address quickly and with the noted wallet generator, it can be done within 5 minutes so let’s go!

First head over to github and download the wallet generator from Moneromoo-monero here.

Download the zip and extract, or for advanced users Git clone the copied address.

Move those files to an offline computer (one that will never go online if you want that) and open the wallet generator HTML file named: monero-wallet-generator.html. It should open in your browser and look like this:

After you create, scroll down and all your info should show up.

After you set everything up and create a wallet file, scroll down and you will see your public wallet address, Seed, and Keys. This version doesn’t support QR codes for Aeon but there are some forked ones that do. Use at your own risk if they are not Dev-Approved forks. The address, seed, and keys are here:

Everything you need to see is here. This will only create a base address, not an X address that 12.0+ supports.

Now let’s restore this address with Aeon-GUI to make sure this actually worked. Open Aeon-GUI and select your language, today its English.

Now select restore from seed or keys button:

OK, I think we get the hint here. That center button right?

Now we can select from Seed or Keys. Enter your 24-word seed from the web gui for the wallet generator and select a wallet file name and restore height:

Or select “Restore from keys” and enter your information:

Whoa, that’s a lot of letters and numbers. Good thing for copy paste right?

Wait a second. 24-word seed? Oh no! Aeon is currently using a 25-word seed. Have I lost all my Aeons and never getting them back because I don’t have the correct 25-word seed? Do I just add another random word or something?

Relax, it’s ok. Aeon-GUI will take your 24-word seed and magically make it a 25-word seed and restore everything. Click next and enter a strong password such as “Password” or “Password1234” or “pA$$W0rD”. Something nobody would ever guess if your computer was compromised right.

After you have everything in select a daemon or remote node address and port on the next screen and click next and verify everything looks good.

Click USE AEON and let your daemon or wallet update.

To verify everything worked, let’s check on Aeon-GUI if we correctly restored the same wallet address and keys.

Now, about that SEED we freaked out about. Aeon has created us a new 25-word seed. This is the NEW seed and you need to save this NEW seed to restore your current NEW wallet file in the future. So write this down along with the secret view and spend keys and toss it in your safe. If all else fails, the 24-word should be supported until noted otherwise.

Now that we have verified the process works, we can create a NEW address offline and either print that off or use Aeon-GUI to restore that new file to get our QR code for future usage in our stores that accept Aeon for payment, or a web merchant. I hope that this will help people in generating offline wallets!
